💸 Apply for “Elterngeld”

… which translates to “parental allowance”

• Who can get it: All parents (birth or adoptive) who reduce or pause work to care for their child.
• How much:
  • Typically 65–67% of the applicant’s net income (up to €1,800/month).
• Duration:
  • Can be taken for up to 14 months total between both parents.
  • One parent can take a maximum of 12 months.
  • The full 14 months is only possible if both parents take at least 2 months each (this is often referred to as the “Partnermonate”).
• Flexibility:
  • Can be taken in blocks or part-time, e.g. 2 months off, or spread over a longer period at reduced hours.
• Application:
  • Submit to the Elterngeldstelle (Parental Allowance Office) after the baby is born.
  • Payment begins once approved, but can be backdated for up to 3 months — so early prep is ideal.
